Agape is the word used in the Bible to describe the specific type of love that God shows to and shares with us. To prepare for the Maundy Thursday service, we will share a simple dinner beforehand. All are welcome.
“Maundy” is derived from the Latin word “mandatum”, meaning “commandment”, and refers to the words of our Lord in John 13:34-35, “A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
On the night before Good Friday, the Church brings to mind the great love of our Lord for us, and that great love which we are to emulate towards one another.
A special service of Divine Worship will be followed by the stripping of the altar and a vigil at the side chapel.
The “Good” in “Good Friday” derives from an earlier English form of “God”. Therefore, the day in which we remember the atoning death of our Lord (in which he bore the divine punishment for human sin in our place on the cross) is “God’s Friday”. A special service of Divine Worship will be held to remember this most solemn of occasions, in which we hold together the horror of the consequences of our sin upon he who knew no sin alongside the joyous knowledge of the fact that, on the third day, he rose again.
A service of Sung Matins (also known as Morning Prayer) held in the side chapel to mark the intervening time between our Lord’s death and resurrection.
Christ is risen - He is risen indeed! A special service of Divine Worship held according to ancient tradition on the eve before Easter Day.
Christ is risen - He is risen indeed! On the greatest day of the Christian year, Easter Day, Divine Worship is held to celebrate the culmination of the purpose of Jesus’ birth and death - his resurrection from the dead, crushing the head of the serpent, destroying death, and opening the way to heaven to all who believe.
