Epiphany IV | 30th January 2022

Now we see in a mirror, dimly, but then we will see face to face. Now I know only I part; then I will know fully, even as I have been fully known.
— 1 Corinthians 13:14

Collect: Living God, in Christ you make all things new: transform the poverty of our nature by the riches of your grace, and in the renewal of our lives make known your glory; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever. Amen.

Lenten Studies

It is not too late to join a group.

In our Lenten studies, commencing the Week beginning the 27th February we will be undertaking a discussion into the ‘Filioque Clause’. The Clause relates to the line in the Nicean Creed (page 123 of The Prayer Book): “We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life who proceeds from the Father and the Son,”  Certain Christian traditions do not contain “and the Son.”

This Latin word meaning “and from the Son” (filioque) had  caused much division in the early church that it led to the split between the Roman  Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox tradition in AD 1054.

Where did this controversy arise, and how can one Latin phrase split an entire church into two?
