Article 7

Of the Old Testament.

The Old Testament is not contrary to the New: for both in the Old and New Testament everlasting life is offered to Mankind by Christ, who is the only Mediator between God and Man, being both God and Man. Wherefore there are not to be heard, which feign that the old Fathers did look only for transitory promises. Although the Law given from God by Moses, as touching Ceremonies and Rites, do not bind Christian men, nor the Civil precepts thereof ought of necessity to be received in any commonwealth; yet, notwithstanding, no Christian man whatsoever is free from the obedience of the Commandments which are called Moral.

 Having established what we believe to be the Holy Scriptures, our Anglican forefathers felt it necessary to go a little deeper into the Old Testament. There were three points that needed to be made, and we should be grateful because even though they refer to ancient issues, they still come up in the Church today.

First is the need to remind us that the Old Testament is not inconsistent with the New. The name for that ancient heresy is “Marcionism”, which claims that the God of the Old Testament is different to the new. This error is still around today! And yet the Church has always affirmed that “everlasting life is offered… by Christ” in both. We may get explicit information about Jesus in the New Testament, but he is still there in the Old, and the people back then were saved according to their faith in what God had revealed. Then we get the reminder that the saints back then knew they were looking forward not just to a literal, physical kingdom (such as was promised to Abraham and David), but an everlasting kingdom, with an immortal king. Again, they might not have yet known about Jesus of Nazareth, but they were still spiritual people, and they knew God had big plans.

Finally we get this bit about the Law of Moses. This takes a bit of extra unpacking. Some theologians have tried to separate all of the various instructions into three categories: Ceremonial; Civil; and Moral. This is a bit difficult because they all run into each other! Instead, we ought to look at the Law of Moses and draw out the aspects which are moral, rather than labelling an entire instruction as such. (Incidentally, this is the basis of thought behind our “Common Law” legal system.) Why not go digging around your Bible looking for Jesus in the Old Testament sometime this week?

Article 6

Of the Sufficiency of the Holy Scriptures for Salvation.

Holy Scripture containeth all things necessary to salvation: so that whatsoever is not read therein, nor may be proved thereby, is not to be required of any man, that it should be believed as an article of the Faith, or be thought requisite or necessary to salvation. In the name of the holy Scripture we do understand those Canonical Books of the Old and New Testament, of whose authority was never any doubt in the Church.  Of the Names and Number of the Canonical Books [Here is the list of the 39 books of the Old Testament]. And the other Books (as Hierome saith) the Church doth read for example of life and instruction of manners; but yet doth it not apply them to establish any doctrine; such are these following: [Here is the list of the 14 books of the Apocrypha]. All the Books of the New Testament, as they are commonly received, we do receive, and account them Canonical.

This is a rather long Article, and even with some edits for brevity, I am not left with much room for a reflection!  Let’s begin by remembering the context.

Plenty of things had been added to Christianity; things that weren’t in the Bible. But the Reformers had read their Bible for themselves, and experienced the gospel which is “the power of God for salvation” (Rom 1:16). The records of these clergymen are just endless accounts of personal conversion moments, simply by having read the Bible!

 They wanted to make sure that people didn’t waste their time (and endanger their souls) by making the same mistakes of their generation, by mixing in all that other stuff that just ends up being a distraction.

We also get a reminder that historically, the 39 books of the Old Testament as we have them are, in fact, the historical scriptures of God’s people. The “Apocrypha”, the 14 books up for debate, are helpful for “instruction of manners”, but are not “God-breathed” and inspired by the Holy Spirit in the same way (2 Tim 3:16; 2 Pet 1:21). This is the historical position of the Church, in which we  stand.

What I find most gripping about the Scriptures (and this is borne out time and again by experience) is how they are continually fresh; every time I read them, God reveals something new. And I think that can only be a result of its divine inspiration.

Article 5

Of the Holy Ghost.

The Holy Ghost, proceeding from the Father and the Son, is of one substance, majesty, and glory, with the Father and the Son, very and eternal God.

Having established God, the Trinity and then worked our way through Christ and his work in salvation, we now move to the third Person of God: The Holy Spirit or, in the old language, the Holy Ghost.

 As a religious tradition descended from the Western Church, we affirm that the Holy Spirit proceeds from both the Father and the Son. “Proceeding” is complicated, insufficient language. What is more important is the fact that the Holy Spirit is a Person, not some vague life-force or energy field. Of equal importance is the question that follows: what does he do?

 In John 15 and 16, Jesus is speaking to his disciples immediately prior his betrayal and arrest. He tells them about the Holy Spirit, whom Jesus sends. The Holy Spirit helps us, by teaching us about Jesus and the Father, by comforting us in times of trial, and of reminding us of what wonderful things are yet to come for God’s people. If you have ever felt God’s comfort, encouragement, or instruction, then you have the Holy Spirit to thank, for it was he who communicated it to you.

 Another work of the Holy Spirit is to transform us into the image of Christ. In Romans 7 and 8, the Apostle is talking about the power of death and sin upon us who are in the flesh. At the hinge point between the two chapters, he collapses in misery, before jumping for joy at God’s solution. We have the Holy Spirit within us, who is the Spirit of Christ (Rom 8:9-11). Since the Holy Spirit proceeds from the Son as well as the Father, we have the image of Christ dwelling within us, transforming us into that image. All our effort at personal growth in holiness is guaranteed, for it is the Holy Spirit of our gracious and loving Lord Jesus who dwells in us.

 Most of the work of the Holy Spirit is humble work. He points us to God, leading us to Christ, communicating his forgiveness and love, and transforming us into his image. Yet he is also God, of one substance, majesty and glory, with the Father and the Son, very and eternal God. The Holy Spirit is a wonderful companion to lead us into the type of godly, loving humility that rejoices at uplifting others.

Article 4

Of the Resurrection of Christ.

Christ did truly rise again from death, and took again his body, with flesh, bones, and all things appertaining to the perfection of Man's nature; wherewith he ascended into Heaven, and there sitteth, until he return to judge all Men at the last day.

Let’s catch up to where we are. We have affirmed that there is one God, in three Persons, one of whom is the eternal Word, who was made flesh in the person of Jesus of Nazareth, and died. Now we continue: he did truly rise again from death.

This is the great Christian hope: that Jesus of Nazareth was a real, historical person; he was God incarnate; he was killed; he came back from the dead; and he ascended into heaven. All now who place their trust and allegiance in him share in his victory over the grave, and have a place prepared for them by his side when he returns in judgement.

But our Article today, with uncharacteristic specificity, gives us some more details. He didn’t rise again as a ghost, and he didn’t ascend into heaven as a ghost. He took again his body with everything that makes a human human: flesh, bones, and all things appertaining to the perfection of human nature. With one wonderfully Shakespearian line, our spiritual ancestors outflanked the ancient heresy that claimed that physical matter is inherently evil. God made our bodies, and our Lord rose and ascended in his human body. There is something about our physicality that reveals God’s glory.

Whatever the reality of it all is, I don’t think any of us will really fully understand until after Christ’s return. One thinker observed that the caterpillar doesn’t truly comprehend what being a butterfly will be like until the change actually happens. In the same way, we can’t truly comprehend what our glorified bodies will be like until we get them.

In the meantime, we still have to put up with all the aches, creaks, dots, wrinkles and everything else that these pre-glorified bodies get. But even with all our maladies and complaints, God is still pleased to make our bodies his temple, for the glory of God dwells within each Christian (1 Cor 6:19). What wonder, that the perfect God would make our body his temple! What joy, that we will be given perfect bodies when Christ returns in judgement!
