06 March 2022: Lent I (First Sunday in Lent)

Worship the Lord your God, and serve only him
— Luke 4:8

Collect: O saving God, who led your people through the wilderness and brought them to the promised land: so guide us that, following our Saviour, we may walk through the wilderness of this world and be brought to the glory of the world which is to come; through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and for ever.  Amen.

Prayers For The World And The Church

Prayers For The World And The Church

For The World:  We pray for a right spirit of peace and cooperation to overcome the spirit of hatred, bitterness, and division in all countries. We pray for relief of suffering of innocent victims in countries troubled by conflict and unrest.  As we pray for the overcoming of the spirit of hatred, bitterness, and division we pray for the unrest between Ukraine and Russia.  We also pray for those other nations where there is unrest within or from outside, but goes unknown.

Our Country: We continue to pray with all other denominations and faiths; for our local, national and global communities experiencing great need and distress caused by COVID-19, especially at this time.  We pray for the Ukrainian communities throughout Australia as this time.

We pray for the members of our parish who either elected or nominated, have taken on the various roles of leadership within our Parish for this year and have been commissioned into their roles this morning.

Our Community: We pray for those who have been, and for those who continue to;  adversely affected by the torrential run of the past week.  For those who have been forced out of their homes and now seek shelter elsewhere. For those who will have to rebuild their homes and their lives.

Lent Discussions (Studies) have commenced.

It is not too late to join a group.

Our Lenten studies, have commenced this past week. We are discussing the ‘Filioque Clause’. The Clause relates to the line in the Nicean Creed (page 123 of The Prayer Book): “We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life who proceeds from the Father and the Son,”  Certain Christian traditions do not contain “and the Son.”

This Latin word meaning “and from the Son” (filioque) had  caused much division in the early church that it led to the split between the Roman  Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox tradition in AD 1054.

Where did this controversy arise, and how can one Latin phrase split an entire church into two?
