27 February 2022: Epiphany 8

My word shall not return to me empty,’ says the Lord, ‘but it shall accomplish that which I purpose, and succeed in the thing for which I sent it.’
— Isaiah 55:11

Collect: Almighty God, you have sent the Spirit of your Son into our hearts and freed us from bondage to sin: give us grace to dedicate our freedom to your service, that we and all people may be brought to the glorious liberty of the children of God; through Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Prayers For The World And The Church

For The World:  We pray for a right spirit of peace and cooperation to overcome the spirit of hatred, bitterness, and division in all countries. We pray for relief of suffering of innocent victims in countries troubled by conflict and unrest.  As we pray for the overcoming of the spirit of hatred, bitterness, and division we pray for the unrest between Ukraine and Russia.  We also pray for those other nations where there is unrestwithin or from outside, but goes unreported

Our Country: We continue to pray with all other denominations and faiths; for our local, national and global communities experiencing great need and distress caused by COVID-19, especially at this time.  We pray for and give thanks for the branches of Legacy throughout our nation.

World Wide Anglican Community:  The Anglican Church of Kenya: for the Archbishop, bishops, clergy and people.

The Anglican Church of Australia: The Diocese of Willochra: John Stead - Bishop, clergy and people.

Defence Force Anglicans: We give thanks and pray for the work of Legacy, for its care for war widows and widowers and their families.  We give thanks for those who spend their lives caring for others.  For the practical help that Legacy gives to the families of those who have suffered in war.

Our Parish: We pray for the commencement of the Lent Studies this week.  For the Tuesday morning group, the Thursday evening group, and for those studying at home.

Our Community: As we give thanks for the rains these past weeks, and are protected by our own homes, we are mindful of those less fortunate than ourselves who have no dry place to lay their heads or to keep warm: for individuals and for families who live in parks or hand made shelters.

Lent Discussions (Studies) commence this week of 27th February

It is not too late to join a group.

In our Lenten studies, commencing this Week beginning the 27th February we will be undertaking a discussion into the ‘Filioque Clause’. The Clause relates to the line in the Nicean Creed (page 123 of The Prayer Book): “We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life who proceeds from the Father and the Son,”  Certain Christian traditions do not contain “and the Son.”

This Latin word meaning “and from the Son” (filioque) had  caused much division in the early church that it led to the split between the Roman  Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox tradition in AD 1054.

Where did this controversy arise, and how can one Latin phrase split an entire church into two?
