13 February 2022: Epiphany 6

Blessed are you when people hate you on account of the Son of man. Rejoice and leap for joy, for behold, your reward is great in heaven.
— Luke 6:23

Collect: Righteous God, you challenge the powers that rule this world and you show favour to the oppressed: instil in us a true sense of justice, that we may discern the signs of your kingdom and strive for right to prevail; for the sake of Jesus Christ our Lord, who lives and reigns with you in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, for ever and ever.  Amen.

Lent Discussions (Studies) commence week of 27th February

It is not too late to join a group.

In our Lenten studies, commencing the Week beginning the 27th February we will be undertaking a discussion into the ‘Filioque Clause’. The Clause relates to the line in the Nicean Creed (page 123 of The Prayer Book): “We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life who proceeds from the Father and the Son,”  Certain Christian traditions do not contain “and the Son.”

This Latin word meaning “and from the Son” (filioque) had  caused much division in the early church that it led to the split between the Roman  Catholic Church and the Eastern Orthodox tradition in AD 1054.

Where did this controversy arise, and how can one Latin phrase split an entire church into two?
