Second Sunday After Pentecost

Sunday, June 7, 2026

O Lord, from whom alone all good things come:

grant that by your holy inspiration

and by your merciful guiding

may perform them;

through our Lord Jesus Christ. Amen.

Prayer Space with Leisa

As we now journey through the season of Ordinary Time, my weekly prayers will take a more inward focus, reflecting on the life and ministry of our parish. Together, we will prayerfully consider how God is calling St Peter The Fisherman into its next season of mission and outreach, and how we might grow in faith, service, welcome, and love for one another. May we be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we discern God’s purpose for our church and community.

Here is your invitation during the week to pause, pray, and open your heart to God’s vision for our parish.

Loving God,

we pray for our parish of St Peter The Fisherman as we seek to discern the next season of mission and outreach to which you are calling us.

Bless our parish family, our ministry, and our community. May we be a church that reflects your love, extends your hospitality, and faithfully casts it nets wide, trusting that you are at work among us.

Renew our vision, strengthen our faith, and guide us into new opportunities to serve, welcome, and share your love with our community.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Article 18: Of Obtaining Eternal Salvation Only By The Name Of Christ

They also are to be had accursed that presume to say, That every man shall be saved by the Law or Sect which he professeth, so that he be diligent to frame his life according to that Law, and the light of Nature. For holy Scripture doth set out unto us only the Name of Jesus Christ, whereby men must be saved.

There is a great benefit to reading ancient Church history. When we do so, we discover that most of the arguments around who God is and who we are have already happened. There might be different names, but they are the same issue. Different masks, same deceiver. Recently I came across a short history of the influence of Hinduism in the English-speaking world. It described a preacher of that religion, and how he convinced many in the society he went to influence the cosmic claims of that religion. Considering it was from over a century ago, it was impressive to see how far his message had survived. It was the idea that there is one supreme divine being, or thought, above all others. Because of that, each human religion and spirituality is therefore one pathway of many in which we all aspire to get to that one supreme divine revelation. Does this sound familiar in Australia in the early 21st Century? I don’t think we would have to go far to find people who would agree with that idea. Yet Christians, and us Anglicans in particular, identify that claim as a heresy (“heresy” meaning a claim that is factually incorrect). We don’t even have to go back that far to find a definitive statement on it: less than 500 years ago our spiritual forebears declared that those who “presume to say” such things “are to be had accursed”. I very much doubt Archbishop Thomas Cranmer had heard of Hinduism, but as our history teaches and Scripture affirms, there is nothing new under the sun (Eccles 1:9). In his day there was a similar idea, just with a different name. It is not enough to choose one path and stick to it. The God of the Bible is the God of all things. All humans come from the same source, and are made and sustained by the same God, revealed in these days to be the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. To reject that is not to reject a “Western” religion, or some ancient Near Eastern Jewish sect. It is to reject the God who is that supreme divine being. This supreme divine being, the Triune God, sent the Second Person of God into this world: Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah, or Christ. He died on the cross so that our sins may be forgiven, made righteous, and be allowed to enter into the immediate presence of the God who is, and was, and is to be. This is the great spiritual issue of our day, and indeed of every age: we humans are condemned by our own thoughts and actions; and yet the God who condemns us also loves us and has given us a path to forgiveness. This path to forgiveness is of infinite value, since it is through the very blood of that same God we have offended against. Eternal salvation is to be obtained only by the name of Christ since that is the path God has offered to us. And it is sufficient to forgive all things, and it is the most supreme revelation of God’s love towards us that he would do such a thing for us.
