St Peter and St Paul. Apostles and Martyrs

Sunday, June 21, 2026

Almighty God,

whose apostles Peter and Paul

glorified you in their deaths as in their lives:

grant that your Church,

inspired by their teaching and example,

and knit together in unity by your Spirit,

may ever stand firm upon the one foundation,

your Son Jesus Christ our Lord;

who lives and reigns with you,

in the unity of the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever. Amen.

Prayer Space with Leisa

As we seek to share God’s love beyond our church walls, let us hold in prayer the residents, families, and staff of Beaumont Aged Care, and give thanks for the ministry of Father Ted among them.

Loving God,

We thank you for the opportunity to share your love with the residents, families, and staff of Beaumont Aged Care.

We give thanks for the ministry of Father Ted and pray for your blessings upon him as he faithfully serves and cares for the residents. Strengthen and encourage him in his work, and may his presence bring comfort, hope, and the assurance of your love.

Bless all who call this community home. Grant comfort to those who are lonely, strength to those who are unwell, and peace to those who carry worries or burdens. Surround families with your love and sustain them in their care and support of loved ones.

We pray for the staff and carers whose compassion, patience and dedication enrich the lives of others each day. Renew them in their work and bless them with wisdom, strength and encouragement.

As we continue our outreach and ministry among them, help us to be bearers of your hope, kindness and grace. May our presence bring friendship, joy and a reminder that each person is deeply loved by you.

 Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

What is A Patronal Festival?

This Sunday we celebrate our patron saint: St Peter, who was a fisherman, first of fish and then of people. But the liturgy also mentions St Paul. This is because the Church celebrates both saints on the same day: June 29. We have moved the date forward to coincide with the Floral Festival and a visit from our bishop - putting together as many reasons to celebrate as possible on the same day! A patronal festival is the day a parish honours their patron saint. The whole idea behind a church being named after a saint and naming that saint as their patron, comes from our understanding of the doctrine of the communion of saints, which we affirm in the Apostles and Nicene Creeds. In Revelation we read St John’s vision of heaven and scattered throughout there are references to the prayers of the saints (the saints being the human inhabitants of heaven) being present before the Lamb. They are praying and their prayers are offered up with incense, golden bowls and supported by the ministry of angels - a beautiful and mysterious image of the communion between God and those of his creatures he holds close in the heavenly places. (Rev 5:8; 6:9-11; 8:3-4) Just as we on earth pray to the Father that his will be done, so too do his saints in heaven. But why do two of the greatest apostles have to share the same feast day? All the others get their own; and while they were on earth, St Peter and St Paul certainly had their share of disagreements (Gal 2:11-14) One suggestion I quite like is if we consider the difference in their approach to evangelism. St Paul was creative, striving to reach people where they were and speaking into their particular context. (1 Cor 9:22) St Peter, meanwhile, confessed Jesus as the Messiah, a statement which our Lord called a “rock” which not even the gates of hell could prevail against. (Matt 16:13-20) And so as we glorify God in his saints, let us consider how we might follow their examples, proclaiming the Gospel in a way that people will understand, while remaining firm on the rock of the teaching of the Lord Jesus.

Prayer Space with Leisa

This coming weekend, our parish will again welcome visitors from across the community to the Redcliffe Floral and Art Festival, and we look forward to welcoming Bishop Sarah Plowman as she opens the festival. Let us pray for God’s blessing upon this special event and all who will be part of it.

Loving God,

We give you thanks for the opportunity to welcome our community through the Redcliffe Floral and Art Festival. As we open our church doors this coming weekend, may this event be more than a celebration of beauty and creativity; may it be an expression of your love, hospitality, and grace.

Bless all who have contributed their gifts, time, and talents in preparation for this festival, especially those who have worked tirelessly behind the scenes. May their efforts bring joy to all who visit and reflect the beauty of your creation.

We give thanks for the ministry of Bishop Sarah Plowman and warmly welcome her as she joins us to open the festival. Bless her wisdom, strength, and joy in her ministry, and may her presence among us be a source of encouragement and fellowship.

As visitors enter our church over these days, may they encounter a warm welcome, meaningful connection, and the peace of your presence. Help us to be faithful ambassadors of Christ, sharing your love through every conversation, every act of kindness, and every expression of hospitality.

Guide us as we seek to serve our community and grow in mission. May this festival strengthen relationships, open new opportunities for outreach, and help others see the hope and love that are found in you.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Prayer Space with Leisa

As we now journey through the season of Ordinary Time, my weekly prayers will take a more inward focus, reflecting on the life and ministry of our parish. Together, we will prayerfully consider how God is calling St Peter The Fisherman into its next season of mission and outreach, and how we might grow in faith, service, welcome, and love for one another. May we be open to the guidance of the Holy Spirit as we discern God’s purpose for our church and community.

Here is your invitation during the week to pause, pray, and open your heart to God’s vision for our parish.

Loving God,

we pray for our parish of St Peter The Fisherman as we seek to discern the next season of mission and outreach to which you are calling us.

Bless our parish family, our ministry, and our community. May we be a church that reflects your love, extends your hospitality, and faithfully casts it nets wide, trusting that you are at work among us.

Renew our vision, strengthen our faith, and guide us into new opportunities to serve, welcome, and share your love with our community.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen

Article 18: Of Obtaining Eternal Salvation Only By The Name Of Christ

They also are to be had accursed that presume to say, That every man shall be saved by the Law or Sect which he professeth, so that he be diligent to frame his life according to that Law, and the light of Nature. For holy Scripture doth set out unto us only the Name of Jesus Christ, whereby men must be saved.

There is a great benefit to reading ancient Church history. When we do so, we discover that most of the arguments around who God is and who we are have already happened. There might be different names, but they are the same issue. Different masks, same deceiver. Recently I came across a short history of the influence of Hinduism in the English-speaking world. It described a preacher of that religion, and how he convinced many in the society he went to influence the cosmic claims of that religion. Considering it was from over a century ago, it was impressive to see how far his message had survived. It was the idea that there is one supreme divine being, or thought, above all others. Because of that, each human religion and spirituality is therefore one pathway of many in which we all aspire to get to that one supreme divine revelation. Does this sound familiar in Australia in the early 21st Century? I don’t think we would have to go far to find people who would agree with that idea. Yet Christians, and us Anglicans in particular, identify that claim as a heresy (“heresy” meaning a claim that is factually incorrect). We don’t even have to go back that far to find a definitive statement on it: less than 500 years ago our spiritual forebears declared that those who “presume to say” such things “are to be had accursed”. I very much doubt Archbishop Thomas Cranmer had heard of Hinduism, but as our history teaches and Scripture affirms, there is nothing new under the sun (Eccles 1:9). In his day there was a similar idea, just with a different name. It is not enough to choose one path and stick to it. The God of the Bible is the God of all things. All humans come from the same source, and are made and sustained by the same God, revealed in these days to be the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. To reject that is not to reject a “Western” religion, or some ancient Near Eastern Jewish sect. It is to reject the God who is that supreme divine being. This supreme divine being, the Triune God, sent the Second Person of God into this world: Jesus of Nazareth, the Messiah, or Christ. He died on the cross so that our sins may be forgiven, made righteous, and be allowed to enter into the immediate presence of the God who is, and was, and is to be. This is the great spiritual issue of our day, and indeed of every age: we humans are condemned by our own thoughts and actions; and yet the God who condemns us also loves us and has given us a path to forgiveness. This path to forgiveness is of infinite value, since it is through the very blood of that same God we have offended against. Eternal salvation is to be obtained only by the name of Christ since that is the path God has offered to us. And it is sufficient to forgive all things, and it is the most supreme revelation of God’s love towards us that he would do such a thing for us.

Trinity Sunday

Sunday, May 31, 2026

Almighty and everliving God,

increase in us your gift of faith,

so that, forsaking what lies behind

and reaching out to that which is before us,

we may run the way of your commandments

and win the crown of everlasting joy;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer Space with Leisa

Today, on this Trinity Sunday, we gather to worship the one God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. As we reflect on the mystery and the beauty of the Holy Trinity, we are reminded that God is revealed to us in love, grace, and fellowship, drawing us into deeper relationship with him and with one another.

As we journey through this week, you are invited to make space each day to pause, pray, and rest in God’s presence. Let us draw near to God in prayer with open and trusting hearts.

Loving and eternal God,

Father, Son, and Holy Spirit,

We praise you for the mystery of your love

Revealed to us in creation, redemption, and the gift of your Spirit.

Draw us closer to you,

That we may live in faith, hope, and unity.

Teach us to reflect your love in our homes, our church, and our community,

Showing compassion, grace, and peace to all we meet.

Father, guide us in your wisdom.

Lord Jesus, lead us in your truth.

Holy Spirit, fill us with courage and strength to serve you faithfully each day.

 (continued overleaf)

May the grace of the Holy Trinity

Surround us, sustain us, and send us out in love,

Today and always.

Through Jesus Christ our lord.

Amen

Alongside the Apostles’ Creed, which we recite at baptisms (and during Eastertide, in order to recollect our own baptismal vows), and the Nicene Creed, the Athanasian Creed completes the three ancient Creeds of the Church that we affirm as part of our unity as Anglicans. “Creed” comes from the Latin word for heart; it is a statement of worship as much as intellectual belief.

Attributed to St Athanasius, he is not likely to have written it himself. The name comes moreso from the fact that he was one of the great saints who fought for the truth of the Triune God in a time when the Church was attacked by anti-Trinitarian heresy. It is also known by the name Quicunque Vult, the first words of the Creed as it appears in the Latin.

Whoever wishes to be saved: must, above all, hold to the catholic* faith.
Unless they keep this faith whole and complete: they will undoubtedly be lost forever.
And this is the catholic faith: we worship one God in Trinity, and Trinity in Unity.
We neither conflate the persons: nor divide the substance.
For there is one person of the Father, another of the Son: and another of the Holy Spirit.

But the godhead of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit is one: their glory is equal, and their majesty co-eternal.
What the Father is, the Son is: and the Holy Spirit is also.
The Father is uncreated, the Son uncreated: and the Holy Spirit uncreated.
The Father is immeasurable, the Son immeasurable: and the Holy Spirit immeasurable.
The Father is eternal, the Son eternal: and the Holy Spirit eternal.
Yet they are not three eternal beings: but one eternal being.
Just as there are neither three uncreated beings, nor three immeasurable beings: but one uncreated, immeasurable being.
Likewise, the Father is almighty, the Son almighty: and the Holy Spirit almighty.
And yet they are not three almighty beings: but one almighty being.
So, the Father is God, the Son is God: and the Holy Spirit is God.
And yet they are not three Gods: but one God.
So, the Father is Lord, the Son is Lord: and the Holy Spirit is Lord.
And yet they are not three Lords: but one Lord.
For, just as Christian truth compels us: to confess each person individually as God and Lord,
so the catholic religion forbids us: from saying there are three Gods or three Lords.

The Father is made from none: neither created, nor begotten.
The Son is of the Father alone: neither made, nor created, but begotten.
The Holy Spirit is from the Father and the Son: neither made, nor created, nor begotten, but proceeding.
So, there is one Father: not three Fathers.
There is one Son: not three Sons.
There is one Holy Spirit: not three Holy Spirits.
And in this Trinity no person is before or after another: no person is greater or less than another.
But the whole three persons are coeternal: and coequal with each other.
So, as in everything, as was said above: the Unity in Trinity, and the Trinity in Unity, is to be worshipped.
Whoever wishes to be saved: must understand the Trinity in this way.

But it is also necessary for eternal salvation: to believe faithfully in the incarnation of our Lord Jesus Christ.
For this is the right faith we believe and confess: our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God, is God and man.
He is God, of the substance of the Father, begotten before time: and he is man, of the substance of his mother, born in time.
Perfect God, perfect man: with a rational soul and human flesh.

He is equal to the Father with respect to his divinity: he is less than the Father with respect to his humanity.
Although he is God and man: he is not two, but one Christ.
And he is one, not by the turning of his divinity into flesh: but by the taking of humanity into God.
He is completely one, not by a mixing of substances: but by the unity of his person.
For just as a rational soul and flesh are one man: so God and man are one Christ.
This Christ suffered for our salvation: descended to the dead, and on the third day he rose from the dead.
He ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty: from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.
At his coming, all people will rise with their own bodies: and they will give an account for their own works.
And those who have done good will go into eternal life: but those who have done evil into eternal fire.
This is the catholic faith: unless each person faithfully and firmly believes it, they cannot be saved.

Amen.
