Eleventh Sunday after Pentecost

Sunday, August 9, 2026

Grant to us, Lord, we beseech you,

the spirit to think and do always such things as are right,

that we, who cannot do anything that is good without you,

may by you be enabled to live according to your will;

through Jesus Christ our Lord.

Amen.

Mother’s Union Annual Collection

Today, Sunday, 9 August the Mother’s Union will be collecting funds in support of Anglicare. Recently we have been providing a space for Anglicare’s new Staying On Track initiative. Read on for more information on the work they do:

Staying on Track (SoT) What is Staying on Track?

Staying on Track is a 12-month program designed to help young people aged 10-17 years transition from detention back into the community, aiming to reduce reoffending. It provides tailored, intensive support, including mentoring, education, housing assistance, and therapy, starting in detention and continuing for 6-12 months post release. The rehabilitation model focuses on creating a stable, positive environment, strengthening family connections, and addressing the systemic barriers that are driving offending behaviour to create a pathway to education and employment over the year after release.

Where is the program delivered?

Anglicare Southern Queensland provides the Staying on Track program in the following locations:

. Brisbane North / Redcliffe / Caboolture

. Brisbane South / Redlands

. Ipswich / Western Districts

. Sunshine Coast

. Toowoomba / Roma

Prayer Space with Leisa

Each day, God invites us to love and serve him not only with our hearts, but with every part of who we are. This beautiful blessing from A Prayer Book for Australia (page 221) reminds us that our eyes, ears, hands, feet, minds, and hearts can all become instruments of God’s grace.

A blessing of the whole person

God our creator,

You have made each one of us in every part.

Bless us through and through,

that we may delight to serve you to the full.

Bless our eyes, that we may discern the beauty you give.

Bless our ears, that we may hear you in the music of sounds.

Bless our sense of smell, that your fragrance may fill our being.

Bless our lips, that we may speak your truth,

and sing your joy.

Bless our hands, that they may play, write and touch

as you guide them.

Bless our feet, that they may be messengers of your peace.

Bless our imaginations, that we may be fired with wonder

in your truth.

Bless our hearts, that they may be filled with your love.

Bless us through and through,

That we may delight to serve you to the full,

Through Jesus Christ, who took our nature to make us whole.

Amen.

Tenth Sunday after Pentecost

Sunday, August 2, 2026

Almighty God,

whose beloved Son for our sake

willingly endure the agony and shame of the cross:

give us courage and patience

to take up our cross daily and follow him;

who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,

one God, now and forever.

Amen.

Prayer Space with Leisa

Let us give thanks for the faithful ministry of the Mothers’ Union at St Peter the Fisherman and pray for God’s continued blessing upon its members.

Loving and gracious Father, we give you thanks for the faithful ministry of our Mothers’ Union at St Peter the Fisherman. We thank you for each member and for their commitment to prayer, fellowship, and Christian service. Bless them as they seek to strengthen family life, encourage one another in faith, and reach out with compassion to those in need.

Guide them by your Holy Spirit in all that they do. May their meetings be filled with joy, their friendships be a source of encouragement, and their prayers bring comfort, hope, and strength to many. Continue to inspire them with new opportunities to serve, to welcome others with open hearts, and to be a living witness to the love of Christ within out parish and the wider community.

All this we ask in the precious name of Jesus.

Amen

A Reflection On Baptism

Today we celebrate the sacrament of Baptism, one of the two “Gospel” sacraments, so-called because of two reasons: it is recorded in the Gospels as something our Lord has commanded us to do; and because it points to the gospel message of the Lord Jesus Christ. The way baptism points to the gospel message is because it so closely follows what our Lord did during his time on this earth. He was born in a human body; he went into the waters of the death; and he came back out again to live for ever. In the same way, we go down into the waters of death in our own baptism, and rise to everlasting life in Christ Jesus. And we remember the promise of Scripture that “...we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10) As baptised Christians, we are God’s workmanship, remade and reborn, so that we can step into a life of all the good works God has prepared for us to do. And while this may, at times, seem a fearful burden to carry, we remember that in all things, God’s grace goes before us and sustains us. So, recall to mind your own baptism, and the promises of God that are fulfilled in you as you go out into the world this week.

Ninth Sunday after Pentecost

Sunday, July 26, 2026

O God,

the protector of all that trust in you,

without whom nothing is strong,

nothing is holy:

increase and multiply upon us your mercy,

that, with you as our ruler and guide,

we may so pass through things temporal

that we finally lose not the things eternal.

Grant this, O heavenly Father,

for the sake of Jesus Christ, our Lord. Amen.

Prayer Space with Leisa

Before we pray, I’d like to share that we are beginning an additional outreach ministry in support of the Woody Point Special School.

Through donations and prayer, we hope to encourage the children, their families, the staff, and the school chaplain, sharing Christ’s love in practical and meaningful ways.

If you missed last week’s announcement, there are information flyers and a list of the items needed on the table at the back of the church. We invite you to take one and prayerfully consider how you might support this new ministry.

As we begin this outreach together, let us now place it into God’s loving hands and pray for the entire Woody Point Special School Community.

Loving and gracious God,

We thank you for calling us to be your hands and feet in our community. As we begin this additional outreach with Woody Point Special School, we pray that it may be a ministry of love, compassion, and hope.

We ask your blessing upon the children, their families, the teachers, support staff, school leadership, and chaplain. Surround them with your peace, strengthen them in their daily work and learning, and remind them that they are deeply loved by you.

Bless the gifts that are shared through our parish, and may they be received as a tangible expression of your care and the love of St Peter the Fisherman family. May this outreach build meaningful relationships, encourage hearts, and bring comfort and hope to all it touches.

Guide us as a parish to continue seeking new ways to serve our community with generous hearts. Fill us with your Holy Spirit, that we may be faithful in prayer, joyful in service, and willing to share Christ’s love wherever you lead us.

May this be the beginning of a ministry that grows in faith, kindness, and compassion, bringing glory to your name and blessing to all those we meet.

In the name of Jesus Christ, who calls us to love and serve one another, we pray.

Amen.

Eighth Sunday after Pentecost

Sunday, July 19, 2026

O God,

you alone can order our unruly wills and affections:

teach us to love what you command,

and to desire what you promise,

that, among the changes and chances of this world,

our hearts may surely there be fixed

where true joys are to be found;

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Prayer Space with Leisa

Over the past two Sundays, I have provided you with a simple morning and evening prayer. Our faith, however, is lived not only in the morning and evening, but in the moments between. May this prayer help you remain attentive to God’s presence and open to the quiet prompting of his Holy Spirit through the day. Prayer is not simply something we do: it is a way of walking with God. May these three prayers help you find a daily rhythm or beginning with him, listening for him, and ending the day in the assurance of his love and peace.

Loving God,

In the busyness of this day, help me to pause and remember that you are with me.

Quiet the noise around me and the worries within me, so that I may hear your gentle voice above all else. Teach me to listen not only with my ears, but with an open heart that is willing to follow where you lead.

Open my eyes to recognize your presence in the ordinary moment of today - in a kind word, a helping hand, a moment of stillness, or an unexpected opportunity to share your love.

When I am faced with decisions, grant me wisdom. When I am impatient, grant me grace. When I become distracted, gently draw me back to you.

May your Holy Spirit guide my thoughts, shape my words, and direct my steps, so that my life may reflect the love of Christ in all that I do.

Help me to listen before I speak, to pray before I act, and to trust before I worry. May I never become so busy that I fail to hear your call or overlook the people you place in my path.

As I go about this day, may I walk closely with you, following your will with faith, humility and joy.

Through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Article 21: Of The Authority Of General Councils

General Councils may not be gathered together without the commandment and will of Princes. And when they be gathered together, (forasmuch as they be an assembly of men, whereof all be not governed with the Spirit and Word of God), they may err, and sometimes have erred, even in things pertaining unto God. Wherefore things ordained by them as necessary to salvation have neither strength nor authority, unless it may be declared that they be taken out of holy Scripture.

Whenever I move to minister in a new area, I will spend a bit of time looking up the other churches in the area. Something I find a little humorous (which I think only clergy could chuckle at) is how so many denominations will write their own Statement of Belief. Reading through them, you can usually see they line up exactly with the ancient and universal Creeds we recite as Anglicans: the Apostle’s, Nicene, and Athanasian. What today’s Article reminds us, is that those Creeds (an indeed any Statement of Belief) “have neither strength nor authority, unless it may be declared (or proved) that they be taken out of holy Scripture”. Again, we are reminded that Scripture is our highest authority. Not our only authority - but our highest. And so, when we recite the Creeds, we rejoice, because they take the whole sweep of God’s self-revelation in the Bible, and condense them down into an easily-memorised passage. And we also rejoice because they were written by the whole Church - the truths therein bind us, who are many, as one body, in the truth of God as revealed in Jesus Christ.
